Pedro Schwartz Girón (Madrid, 1935) is a prominent Spanish economist, jurist, and politician, recognized as one of the leading figures of classical liberalism in Spain. The son of diplomats, he earned a law degree from the Complutense University and continued his studies at the London School of Economics (LSE), where he obtained a Ph.D. in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Economics. In London, he was a student of the philosopher Karl Popper, whose influence shaped his defense of individual freedom and critical rationalism.
His professional career includes a distinguished academic career as a professor of the History of Economic Doctrines at the Complutense University, the Autonomous University of Madrid, and San Pablo-CEU University. In the public sphere, he served as a member of Congress for the Liberal Union (1982–1986).
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Centre for European Policy Studies and of the Mont Pèlerin Society, of which he was president from 2014 to 2016. He serves on the Academic Advisory Board of the Liberales Institut in Zurich and is an Adjunct Scholar at the Cato Institute. He writes regularly for Expansión, Actualidad Económica, ABC, and the Financial Times.
