Lobsang Sangay is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the East Asian Legal Studies Program, Harvard Law School, and served as the democratically elected Sikyong (President) of the Central Tibetan Administration for two terms (2011-2021). He earned his BA and LLB from Delhi University and completed his LLM ’95 and SJD ’04 at Harvard Law School, where he received the Yong K. Kim Memorial Prize.
While at Harvard, Sangay organized groundbreaking meetings between Tibetan, Western, and Chinese scholars, including the first-ever dialogue between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and 25 Chinese scholars. He has authored and contributed to publications on Tibet, human rights, and international law, and his works have appeared in leading journals and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.
Recognized as a Young Leader of Asia by the Asia Society (2006), he has spoken at global platforms like Forum 2000, the Halifax Security Forum, and the Oxford Union. His awards include the Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Public Discourse from Trinity College, Dublin (2014), and the Salisbury University Presidential Medal (2015). Sangay has been instrumental in advancing Tibetan rights, including influencing the passage of the Tibetan Policy and Support Act 2020 in the U.S.
